Umm Al Quwain is both the capital and largest city of the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain in the United Arab Emirates, governed by the Al Mualla, the ruling royal family. Situated on the Khor Al Bidiyah peninsula, it lies between Sharjah to the southwest and Ras Al Khaimah to the northeast. The city is bordered by coastal mangroves and has a local economy centred around fishing and tourism. The Al Mualla family, descended from the Al Ali tribe's Al Mualla lineage, originally left Siniyah Island due to water shortages and founded an independent Sheikhdom in Umm Al Quwain. Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla, who assumed leadership on January 2, 2009, currently rules the emirate and serves on the Supreme Council.
