
Dubai has recently unveiled the world's inaugural floating mosque, with an estimated cost of around Dh55 million. The Religious Tourism Project, spearheaded by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai, aims to bolster Islamic tourism in the emirate.
Scheduled for completion by 2024, this groundbreaking structure comprises three floors, each serving a distinct purpose. The first floor features an underwater prayer area, providing a serene and unique environment for worship. The second floor is a versatile multipurpose hall, while the third floor houses an Islamic exhibition. With a capacity to accommodate 50 to 75 worshippers, the project aspires to be a symbol of spiritual tranquility and cultural enrichment.
In addition to its primary functions, the mosque will also host a Quranic exhibition, chronicling the journey of Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Quran, from its inception to the distribution of the latest copies worldwide.
Landmark Project
This landmark project was officially announced during a press conference at the Department’s headquarters, attended by eminent officials, including Dr. Hamad Al Sheikh Ahmed Al Shaibani, the Director General of the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai, alongside other distinguished figures representing various departments.
Ahmed Khalfan Al Mansouri, Cultural Communication Consultant at the Department, expressed the belief in the UAE's global tourism potential, emphasizing the concept of humanity as a higher and more comprehensive concept. He highlighted the role of tourism as a cultural bridge, and a vital attraction for visitors and investors, showcasing the UAE's reputation for safety, hospitality, and embracing diversity.
Religious Tourism
The "Religious Tourism Project in Dubai" aims to position the emirate as a global religious tourism hub, welcoming visitors from diverse backgrounds. This initiative aligns with Dubai's goal of becoming the world's most visited city by 2025, as outlined in the Dubai 2025 strategy.
Dr. Abdullah Ibrahim Abdul Jabbar, Head of Religious Tourism Initiative, detailed the various components of the project, including the Dubai Iftar, visits to historic and distinguished mosques, and social, sports, and educational programs under the "Hala Ramadan" initiative, fostering unity and cultural exchange.
The project also features a Quranic garden, dedicated to the Prophet’s medicine, and festive markets near major mosques, providing tourists with insights into Emirati traditions and fostering cultural exchange.

With the implementation of this monumental project, Dubai aims to strengthen its global presence, anticipating a substantial increase of 3 to 4 percent in tourist visits. This initiative is poised to not only enhance cultural integration but also promote mutual understanding among tourists of various backgrounds.
